Active Ingredients

Omega-3 Fatty Acids (DHA & EPA)

Fish oil is an essential source of omega-3 fatty acids, a polyunsaturated fat, in addition to vitamin A and vitamin D. Omega-3, fatty acids are essential for the proper development of the eyes, brain, reproductive cells and vital for heart health, in addition to optimal functioning of the baby’s immune system.

Maternal DHA status in pregnancy was found to be positively associated with infants’ problem-solving skills at 12 months. The infants’ DHA status at three months was associated with the infants’ problem solving at 12 months. The results accentuate the importance for pregnant and lactating women to have a satisfactory DHA status from dietary intake of seafood or other sources rich in DHA (Braaud et al, 2018). Selancy  Women contains 400mg of natural concentrated fish oil Omega 3 Triglycerides per capsule.

Iron (II) Glycinate / Ferrous Bisglycinate Chelate)

Iron is very necessary for the formation of haemoglobin which transport oxygen in red blood cells to all body tissues. In Selancy Women, a specific form of iron (Iron II Glycinate) which is gentle on the stomach and less likely to cause constipation is used. Iron demand increases during pregnancy by approximately 3 folds from 18mg/day to 27mg/day. Selancy women has an optimum amount of elemental iron of 24mg and the rest is usually obtained from diet.

Vitamin B9 (Folinic acid/Calcium Folinate)

Selancy Women contains the activated form of folate which requires less enzymatic processes for activation and is much better absorbed. To convert it to folate, Folic acid requires numerous pathway conversions. Studies indicate that, in the general population, between 25-50% of individuals (depending on their DNA composition) will have at least one genetic variant impacting the effective conversion of folic acid to folate. Folate is critical in the early stages of conception in the neural tube closure and prevention of neural tube defects such as spina bifida. Folate is critical for the early development of the CNS. Folate is required for the metabolism of nucleic acid, the synthesis of RNA & DNA and deposition of the foetus.

Iodine (Potassium Iodide)

Selancy Women has 218 micrograms of potassium iodide, iodine is required during pregnancy for healthy thyroid hormone production, myelination of the CNS and normal foetal brain development. Thyroid hormone production increases by 50% in the first trimester. Iodine is also essential to produce foetal thyroid hormones.

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine)

Vitamin B1 or Thiamine is a water-soluble vitamin that is used in nearly every cell in the body. It supports energy levels and a healthy metabolism. Humans cannot produce thiamine, so it must be sourced from the diet or supplements to prevent thiamine deficiency.

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)

Riboflavin, also known as vitamin B2, is a water-soluble vitamin that is involved in energy metabolism. It works by helping the body utilize other B vitamins, such as niacin and thiamine, so we can produce energy from the foods that we eat.

Vitamin B3 (Nicotinamide)

Nicotinamide helps the body break down carbohydrates, fats and proteins into energy, plays a role in producing certain hormones in the adrenal glands and helps remove harmful chemicals from the liver.

Vitamin B5 (Calcium Pantothenate)

Calcium Pantothenate is the most well-known form of the water-soluble vitamin B5 that is used in supplements due to its high bio-availability. As the name suggests, Calcium Pantothenate contains calcium – approximately 8%.

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine)

Pyridoxine is in the vitamin B family of vitamins. Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble vitamin that your body needs for several functions. It has health benefits for the body, including promoting brain health and improving mood.

Vitamin B7 (Biotin)

Vitamin B7 is part of the B complex group of vitamins which help the body to convert food into fuel, which is used to produce energy. Biotin is needed for healthy skin, hair and eyes.

Vitamin B12 (Hydroxocobalamin)

Vitamin B12 is an important water-soluble vitamin involved in red blood cell production, brain health, and DNA synthesis. A deficiency can cause serious symptoms, including fatigue, nerve damage, digestive issues and neurological problems like depression and memory loss.

In Selancy Women we use the activated form of Vitamin B12. It has higher affinity to plasma protein and has longer half-life. This increases the presence of hydroxocobalamin in the blood stream.

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)

Ascorbic Acid functions as an antioxidant and is a nutrient your body needs to form blood vessels, cartilage, muscle and collagen in bones. It is also vital to your body’s healing process.

Vitamin D3 (Colecalciferol)

Selancy Women has 12.5 mcg (500iu) of Vitamin D3 per capsule which is important for healthy bone & teeth development and maintaining skeletal health. In addition, adequate maternal Vitamin D during the second half of pregnancy is needed for normal foetal brain development. Maternal vitamin D status directly correlates with an infants’ vitamin D status, intrauterine growth of long bones, infant skeletal growth and bone mineralisation.

Vitamin E (D-Alpha-Tocopheryl Acid Succinate)

D-alpha Tocopherol is the most bio-available form of vitamin E (better absorbed and utilised than other forms). Vitamin E benefits many aspects of health and has been shown to support skin and hair health, and promote healthy vision.

Calcium (Calcium Carbonate)

Calcium Carbonate is used to prevent or to treat a calcium deficiency. Calcium is necessary for many normal functions of the body. This essential mineral supports the bones, heart, muscles, and nervous system.

Manganese (Manganese Amino Acid Chelate)

Manganese is an important trace mineral needed for many vital functions, including nutrient absorption, production of digestive enzymes, bone development and immune-system defences.

Copper (Anhydrous Cupric Silicate)

Copper is an essential nutrient for the body. Together with iron, it enables the body to form red blood cells and helps maintain healthy bones, blood vessels, nerves, and immune function, and it contributes to iron absorption.

Magnesium (Magnesium Citrate)

Magnesium is an important mineral, playing a role in over 300 enzyme reactions in the human body. Its many functions include helping with muscle and nerve function, regulating blood pressure, and supporting the immune system.

Zinc (Zinc Gluconate)

Human bodies are dependent on Zinc for growth and development. Zinc is widely known to play a critical role in foetal development.

Selenium (Selenomethionine)

Selenium is a trace mineral derived from soil and found in foods. Selenium is an essential micronutrient and is included in enzymes (Selenoproteins) in the body, which regulate immunity, redox state, and inflammation.

Have a question?

Ask our team of nutrition experts and scientists or take a look through our FAQs page.

How do I take Selancy Women?

Selancy Women is a 1-A-Day supplement. All the ingredients are contained in a liquid gel capsule, making it easier to swallow than a tablet and provides easier absorption. Just remember to take it with your main meal. Due to it’s formulation, Selancy Women is recommended for use pre-conception, during pregnancy and for breastfeeding. There is no need to change your supplement at any stage of your journey.

Is there a best time to start taking Selancy Women?

If you’re thinking of starting a family or trying for number 2, 3, 4, etc. you also need to plan on when you will start taking Selancy Women. Selancy Women should ideally be taken at least 4-6 weeks prior to conception, during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

Anything I should be aware of when taking these supplements?

Seek medical advice if you have had a baby with neural tube defects such as spina bifida. Advise your doctor of any medicine you take during pregnancy, particularly in your first trimester. Vitamin supplements should not replace a balanced and healthy diet.

Warning: Selancy Women contains selenium which is toxic in high doses. A daily dose of 150 micrograms for adults of selenium from dietary supplements should not be exceeded. Contains fish products as Omega-3 triglycerides, Soy as Soya Oil and Potassium as Potassium Iodide.

Why does Selancy Women contain Folinic Acid (Calcium Folinate) and not traditional Folic Acid as found in most other pregnancy supplements?

Folate is an essential component in a woman’s diet for a healthy pregnancy. A pregnant mother requires approximately 500 micrograms of folate in her diet every day. It is recommended to take a supplement containing 400-500 micrograms of folate and to get the balance from a healthy diet. Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate.

To convert it to folate, Folic acid requires numerous pathway conversions. Studies indicate that, in the general population, between 25-50% of individuals (depending on their DNA composition) will have at least one genetic variant impacting the effective conversion of folic acid to folate (1). In other words, up to 50% of women are not able to effectively convert Folic acid into Folate. Calcium Folinate (also known as Folinic acid) is the active form of Folate, meaning that it does not require the action of enzymes to convert it to Folate. This allows it to be absorbed more effectively by the body.

Folate is important for cellular repair, cellular replication, growth and a healthy pregnancy for both mother and baby. Each Capsule of Ultra Nature Selancy Women contains a recommended therapeutic dose of 500 micrograms of Folinic Acid. This is in accordance with the latest Australian Health Guidelines for pregnancy supplementation. This level of Folate also allows Selancy Women to be used in pre-conception, during all stages of pregnancy and during breastfeeding.

Why is Folate important for pregnant women?

Folate is the natural form of Vitamin B9, naturally found in its absorbable form (Dihydrofolate) in a variety of foods such as: Green leafy vegetables (cabbage, kale, spinach, broccoli, and brussels sprouts), Legumes (beans, peas, and chickpeas), Citrus fruits and juices, Peanuts, Sunflower seeds, Liver, Eggs, Seafood.

Fortified foods such as breads and cereals, along with some supplements, contain Folic acid, a synthetic form of folate.

Both of these forms of folate must be metabolised by an enzyme in our body called the DHFR enzyme. The disadvantage of Folic acid is that it to pass this metabolic pathway twice in order to be converted into the form of Folate that the body can use (called 5-MTHFR).

Studies indicate that 60-70% of the population inherit a genetic polymorphism known as MTHFR, that renders their bodies unable to convert Folic acid into the biologically active form 5-MTHFR.

In women with MTHFR, synthetic Folic acid blocks the entry of “reduced” folates from entering the brain as it blocks the Folate receptors found on the Blood Brain Barrier (BBB).

Only the reduced forms of Folate can enter the brain.

The brain requires “reduced” forms of Folates in order to make: 1. Tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) and neurotransmitters such as Serotonin, Dopamine and Noradrenalin. 2. DNA and RNA bases required for cell division and gene transcription. 3. SAMe which is the body’s most important methyl donor. 4. To balance Homocysteine levels Folate is a critical nutrient for Methylation, a vial process required for life that occurs in every cell of your body. L-Methylfolate is your body’s most bioavailable form of folate, and over 80% of the folate in your body should be in the form of L-Methylfolate. Most women do not even realise they are pregnant during the first 3-4 weeks of pregnancy; therefore, they are advised to ensure they receive adequate levels of Folate prior to conception.

Supplementing ahead of time with Folate will likely reduce the risk of:

Trouble conceiving Difficulty maintaining a pregnancy

Midline defects (2) occur in the 4th to 10th week of embryonic development such as:

Neural Tube Defects Spina Bifida Chiari Malformation Tethered Cord Cleft Palate Blood Clotting Myelomeningocele – an incomplete closure of the caudal portion of the spinal cord. Midline vertebral defects of the bones Cleft Lip Lip Tie Tongue Tie

Cutaneous and subcutaneous defects associated with hidden spinal defects:

Hairy patch Lipoma Skin tag Port-wine Stain Hemangioma Sacral Dimples

Anencephaly which is a congenital condition in which a large part of the skull is absent along with the cerebral hemispheres of the brain.

Congenital heart defects

Each capsule of Selancy Women contains a therapeutic dose of 500 mcg of Folinic Acid (Calcium Folinate), the absorbable form of Folate. A healthy diet rich in leafy green vegetables is encouraged to meet the recommended dose of 400-600 mcg of Folate daily (3).

What is Homocysteine?

Homocysteine is an amino acid that is naturally found in the body. At normal levels, it is not harmful, but elevated levels have been found to be related to miscarriages as well as heart disease. An elevated level of homocysteine in the blood also results in a condition known as hypercoagulability. The word coagulation refers to blood clotting, and hypercoagulability means that blood clots more easily than it should. When this occurs in blood vessels, such as the coronary arteries, it may contribute to the clots that block the blood vessels resulting in coronary artery disease (6).

High homocysteine levels in pregnancy have been associated with these tiny blood clots blocking blood vessels in the placenta, leading to miscarriage. Elevated homocysteine is a confirmed risk factor for other problems in pregnancy including (5): 1. Reduced fertility 2. Congenital developmental defects, such as neural tube defects like anencephaly 3. Preeclampsia 4. Intrauterine growth retardation

How do I know I am at risk of having high Homocysteine levels?

Having your genes tested may provide some indication of the likelihood of having elevated homocysteine levels. Blood tests can be helpful although not always accurate as homocysteine levels tend to fluctuate during pregnancy. People who have variants in the MTHFR gene, especially the C677T variation, are more likely to have high homocysteine levels. And some studies have found a correlation between MTHFR gene variants and increased miscarriage risk (6). MTHFR gene variants are not the only cause of high homocysteine.

Your body uses the nutrients Folate , vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 to metabolize, or use up, homocysteine. People who are deficient in those vitamins can have high homocysteine levels (6). By ensuring you are not deficient in Folate, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 which play major roles in reducing elevated Homocysteine levels, will balance your levels of Homocysteine (7). Each capsule of Selancy Women contains therapeutic doses of vitamins B6, B12 and Folate, all of which will help balance elevated homocysteine levels.

Will the Iron in Selancy Women cause constipation or discomfort?

Selancy Women is formulated with a more absorbable from of Iron called Iron (II) Glycinate. Being a Glycinate form, means that the iron is bound to an amino acid, glycine for optimal absorption. This form of iron is also well-tolerated and should not cause constipation or discomfort.

Each Capsule of Ultra Nature Selancy Women contains a therapeutic dose of 24 mg of Iron.

What is the importance of DHA in Selancy Women?

Selancy Women contains 400 mg of Omega 3 Triglycerides – this is made up of 200mg of Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and 40 mg of Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). DHA supports baby’s brain, eye and nervous system development for all stages of pregnancy, including lactation. According to a recent review, DHA supplementation may improve mood during late pregnancy and early postpartum in pregnant women (1).

Because Selancy Women contains the DHA, there is no need for an otherwise healthy mother to take any other supplements. It contains all of the nutrients, vitamins and minerals that you need for a healthy pregnancy and baby. The only other recommendation is to maintain a healthy natural diet.
