It is well known that vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant. It is also well known that oxidative damage plays a significant role in the cause of cataracts. Therefore, antioxidants have been promoted as therapies to delay and/or prevent cataracts. According to the National Institute of Health, Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and cataracts are the two leading causes of vision loss in older adults. Research suggests that combining Vitamin C and other nutrients may help support macula health.
D-alpha Tocopherol is the most bio-available form of vitamin E (better absorbed and utilised than other forms). Vitamin E benefits many aspects of health and has been shown to support healthy eye function.
Copper is an essential mineral as well as a cofactor for several enzymes involved in energy, connective tissue and blood vessel production. A PubMed search of vision and copper reveals that copper deficiency can contribute to a loss of eye health. One of the main benefits of copper is how it works to boost the connectivity within the tissues of the eye. This means that copper works to keep the pigmentation (and the melanin) in the eye vibrant for longer.
Zinc, an essential mineral, is naturally present in some foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement. Zinc engages in many aspects of cellular metabolism. It is required for the catalytic activity of hundreds of enzymes, and it plays a role in enhancing cell signalling and division. The human retina has a high zinc concentration. Research has shown that supplements containing both zinc and antioxidants may delay the progression of vision loss, possibly by preventing cellular damage in the retina.
