Evidence Summary
There have been many studies examining the anti-inflammatory effect of curcumin which acts by inhibiting the arachidonic acid cascade. In addition, curcumin also has been shown to exert its anti-inflammatory effects via phospholipase, COX-2 and TNF pathways (Rao 2007, Chainani-Wu 2003, Lantz et al 2005). Other studies have also shown that curcumin has significant anti-oxidant activity via direct free radical scavenging activity as well as enhancing the activity of endogenous antioxidants such as glutathione (Ak & Gulcin 2008, Iqbal et al 2003).
